Question: How can I have SBC/AT&T give my website a Reverse DNS lookup pointer?
Answer: This is done via EMAIL. Send a message with the subject of "DNS PTR" to
prov-dns@att.com. In the Email list your name, contact phone, DSL phone number, each IP and what its reverse pointer should read.
Example:
From: Mr. Yourname Here <Yourname@Yahooed.com>
To: prov-dns@att.com
Subject: DNS PTR
Contact Name: Your Name
Contact Phone: 900-555-1212
DSL Phone Number: 392-121-1234
IP Address1: 66.77.88.99 and FQDN: mainserver.ourdomain.com
IP Address1: 66.77.88.100 and FQDN: mail.ourdomain.com
$10 DSL
AT&T was forced by the FCC to give $10 per month DSL to customers in exchange for becoming the uncaring monopoly they are now. The requirement didn't have them advertise it so they not only hide it but when you ask, they tell you its a worthless, slow product that nobody would want. This is a lie. Its a very good product and installs easily and comes with full support. If you do not currently have DSL from them, get this deal. They hide it but here is a link. You'll have to use Internet Explorer to sign up as they broke the link for Firefox.

Dead HP/Dell laptops due to Nvidia overheating
NVidia made some chips that ran too hot. HP/Dell put them into laptops that overheated and died young. If you know who to ask, you can get a replacement laptop. See HPLies.com and Direct2Dell for details. One dead laptop was replaced with a brand new model so it does work to complain. These laptops are often fried and won't even power on.
Power Supply Calculator / Wattage
Many people buy the biggest power supply they can afford. This isn't always the best idea because power supplies run more efficiently near capacity thus they save you money when loaded. ASUS has a nice calculator
which shows you what size power supply you need given all the parts you might grow to. A gigantic system I built required 550 watts minimum (so buy a 600 to 650).

The new Autorun CD patch / Regedit values
For XP Pro users, you can run GPEDIT.MSC to change your autorun settings but XP home users don't get this feature. For home users, you need to use regedit to change your autorun characteristics after the patch in early 2009. The new values allow for settings based on CD, USB, Floppy, etc.

Conficker Help
The media panic over virus stuff has got a lot of people asking.
Here's my basic response.
1) Bring up firefox/opera/chrome and go to http://microsoft.com . If you can't see the site, you're infected. If you used Internet Explorer (or AOL browser), upgrade to Firefox at
http://mozilla.com (free download)
2) Check your antivirus update date. If its in the past 4 days, you're good. If you aren't getting upgrades,
you either need to install new antivirus or you're infected. The virus disables virus scanners from most popular
places AND blocks your ability to get to their websites. Avast still works. Get the free home version http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe
3) Install your windows updates. You can skip the "Genuine Advantage Notification" update but every other
one is worth installing. If you are running XP and not running Service Pack 3, upgrade. Ask for help if
it isn't prompting you already.
4) If you're paranoid or just want affirmation, download this scanner: http://voxsupport.com/cs.exe and install and run it. It scans all the computers on the network and tells you if they're
vulnerable or infected already. It won't scan through firewalls which you should always
turn on but its a good thing to try if you want to see the status of your officeplace. I ran this software on many computers and the only one it rebooted was one with
Sonicwall VPN software running. I suggest saving your work before installing it and
not running Sonicwall, Cisco VPN, or Remote Desktop while using it. 99% of you
don't know what that even means so don't worry. |
